Music is the universal language of mankind. Music exists throughout the world with or without lyrics. We teach and learn through music. Most people listen to music while cleaning the house or driving. Music can be encouraging, uplifting and inspirational. On the other hand, music can be contaminated and corrupt. Currently, the internet has been ablaze with Beyonce’s new album “Renaissance”. One of the songs titled “Church Girl” has excited some Christians and angered others. The lyrics are encouraging girls and women to pop it (twerk), stack your money, go to church on Sunday, and nobody can judge you but you. Beyonce, as well as other female entertainers, are giving women permission to willfully participate in sinful acts. Rap artists are equally as guilty for promoting anti-Christ lyrics. Music releases a rhythm that goes into our ear gates. Music can alter our moods, emotions and trigger hormones. Depending on the type of music, it can cause us to rebel against God.
In Ezekiel 28, Lucifer is described as an “anointed or guardian cherub” who used music to worship God. Some translations refer to Lucifer as the minister of music. God gave Lucifer the gift of music. As I am writing this blog, I had an aha moment! Lucifer did not lose his musical ability when he rebelled against God and was kicked out of heaven. Why wouldn’t he use music to turn people away from God? After all, music is entertainment and harmless, right? Nothing the enemy does is harmless. He uses music for his own wicked and corrupt agenda. He uses entertainers to release rebellion through the sounds of specific music. Many of the lyrics promote the works of the flesh to include self-mutilation (cutting), substance abuse, lust, sexual misconduct, self-centeredness, rebellion, murder and chasing that bag (money). The enemy knows how to use artists who make music that will turn people’s hearts away from God.
I’m not suggesting all music is bad, but Believers must use discernment when listening to music. Does the music you listen to promote the fruits of the spirit or the fruits of the flesh? Does the music you listen to encourage obedience to God or rebellion? Does the music turn your hearts towards God or away from Him? Make sure your music choices honor the Lord rather than your own interests or dishonor the Lord through promoting sinful actions that promote the work of the evil one. Are you going to be a “Church Girl” who follows the Holy Book or a “Church Girl” who follows the Book of Beyonce?
